THE DEETS:

One of the things I love about the original film is the minimal use of score. That made the Sound Design really punch through. This led me to pursue an atmospheric score for the podcast - a score without distinct motifs, melodies, or classic themes.

That required lots of tonal sound recording and post-production. I also wanted to use mostly acoustic sounds as source material. That's why I turned to Steve Uccello. Steve brought his unique sounds and skills to the project in 2 ways.

First - we spent a summer day recording together in a High School Band Room in Salinas California.

Having access to Steve's full array of instruments is great - adding in Band equipment was even better - but this space also had an incredibly large and reverberant meeting room. It did not feature properly tuned acoustics like a studio, theater, or concert hall. It was just a huge room with a lot of natural and sometimes surprising reverb. We used the room to create natural creepy reverb effects and abused instruments with abandon. We recorded both beautiful and horrific sounds in that space for this work. Steve improvised some terrific material on upright bass, cello, and violin and you'll hear those popping in and out of the score.

Steve also delivered compositions based on nothing more than scene descriptions. It was an experiment and I learned a lot from it. It was from this process that "Billy's Swagger" was born. Steve delivered that track almost the minute I was looking for some kind of theme for Director William Friedkin's storyline. It fit perfectly and so Steve created a bunch of different takes on the theme that was used throughout. It is the only proper music "theme" in the series aside from the Main Title.

Performing both the Sound Design and the Score was pure delight. I hope you enjoy it.
